Hertfordshire’s commuter hotspots
Having lived in Hertfordshire my entire life, and spent 15 years commuting into London before joining Ashtons, I’ve always understood just how important location is when choosing a home. It’s about getting the balance right, lifestyle, connectivity and property value, especially for those who rely on regular access into the capital.
New data from Rightmove highlights the UK’s most popular commuter towns, based on where buyer demand is currently highest. It’s great to see Hertfordshire performing so strongly within the London commuter network, with Hitchin and Harpenden taking first and second place.
Hitchin leads the way
Hitchin coming out on top won’t surprise anyone who knows the town. It’s one of those places that just gets the balance right, full of character, independent shops, great places to eat, and a real sense of community.
The average property price currently sits around £495,800, which reflects just how popular the town has become. From a practical point of view, it works just as well. With a journey time of around 31 minutes into King’s Cross and frequent trains throughout the day, it’s exactly the sort of place people move to when they want a bit more space and lifestyle, without losing that easy connection into London.
Harpenden close behind
Following closely in second place is Harpenden, with an average property price of £948,054. Working in the Harpenden office myself, I can see exactly why it attracts so much interest. With its tree-lined streets, outstanding schools, vibrant pubs and restaurants, plus facilities like plentiful sports clubs and the Eric Morecambe Theatre, Harpenden remains one of the most desirable locations in the region.
Commuters benefit from a journey time of approximately 26 minutes into St Pancras International, making it one of the fastest routes into central London.
Commuter links across Hertfordshire
What this data really shows is the continued strength of Hertfordshire as a desirable county. Letchworth Garden City also features highly, and we’re seeing consistent demand across all of our areas.
Welwyn Garden City, Berkhamsted and St Albans all offer excellent rail links into London, each with their own personality and appeal. Digswell, served by Welwyn North, and Knebworth may be villages, yet they benefit from fast and frequent train services, with Digswell also known for its iconic railway arches carrying the line into London.

Equally, Redbourn doesn’t have its own station, but that hasn’t held it back. With easy access to the M1 and being less than 10 minutes from Harpenden, it’s a great option for those who want more of a village feel while still being well connected.
Why commuter towns continue to thrive
These towns offer more than just great transport links. Buyers are increasingly drawn to the lifestyle benefits, including green spaces, strong communities and a better pace of life, all while remaining within easy reach of London. For many, it’s about getting the best of both worlds.
