Ten Reasons to Love Hertford

Continuing our popular ‘Ten Reasons to Love’ series, we take a closer look at the charming and popular town of Hertford.

Initially prospering as a market town, Hertford has modernised, making it a popular destination amongst younger people, whilst maintaining its charm as a characterful and residential town.

1. Hertford Castle

Whether you’re looking for an informative stroll through the grounds or a venue to hire for your next event, Hertford Castle is the idyllic location for an afternoon of fun! Situated by the River Lea and initially built in the 15th century, the castle was a Royal Palace for over 300 years, where Queen Elizabeth I spent the majority of her childhood.

2. Hertford Arts Club

Another unique part of Hertford includes the Arts Club, a non profit organization set up to showcase visual art inspired by the life and work of Alan Davie, who spent 50 years in Hertford. Davie’s work has been collected by the London and New York Tate as well as The Museum of Modern Art. Better yet, entry is free of charge!

3. Famous Pubs

With the history surrounding Hertford, there are an abundance of pubs to explore. From the Hertford Arms to The White Horse – there is no shortage of venues for a Friday night! Ranging from mellow and relaxing to vibrant and buzzy, there is such a selection to enjoy.

There is something for everyone, from Pizza Express to lovely independent restaurants such as Dinnio on the High Street.

5. Brickendon Grange Golf Club

6. St Leonards Church

Rich in history; St Leonard’s has stood for over 800 years and continues to bring the community together. With regular services and events including tea and cake every Sunday afternoon, the church also provides a hands-on learning experience for younger people – all free of charge!

7. Hartham Common

Another good idea if you have younger children that need tiring out! Hartham Common is a local recreational park with a variety of swing sets and open space for them to run to their hearts content. The park also includes a skate park which has remained the popular teenage hang out spot!
