Digging in and making a difference in St Albans with Earthworks

Getting muddy for a good cause

Recently, 14 members of the Ashtons team swapped desks for digging tools, spending the day volunteering with Earthworks, a fantastic St Albans-based charity that supports people with learning disabilities. Together with volunteers, Earthworks cares for 3.5 acres of eco-gardens, a peaceful green space where nature and community thrive.

Celebrating milestones and wellbeing

This was our second year lending a hand, coinciding with both Earthworks’ 30th anniversary and Mental Health Awareness Week. The team tackled everything from weeding and digging to levelling and seeding, all with humour, teamwork and friendly competition.

Connecting with the Earth is proven to lower cortisol levels and support mental balance, making fresh air, teamwork, and a little “mud therapy” the perfect recipe for boosting mood and reducing stress.

Achievements and connection

Seeing the before-and-after progress gave everyone a real sense of satisfaction and pride. We helped make the gardens more accessible while strengthening our connection to nature, colleagues, and community. A huge thank you to everyone who took part, and a special shoutout to Linda, our Accounts Manager, for gifting each of us homegrown apple juice to round off the day. Here’s to more days spent doing good, getting muddy, and giving back!
