With the current pandemic changing the way we all live, could this magnificent home be an ideal solution to life outside the City?
Offered chain free, Number 7 is the largest home in this Grade II-listed mansion, forming the principal central section of the original building and covering three storeys. The property creates a stunning first impression as you approach the double front doors between the Doric columns, though the rear facade is even more impressive. The private rear terrace of Number 7 stretches the full width of the central section, behind four soaring double-storey pillars and overlooking the five acres of shared grounds.
A generous entrance hall leads to a sitting room on the left and the elegant dining room on the right, while the magnificent 30ft drawing room has views over the grounds through tall sash windows and French doors. This room, which was once the ballroom, has the original mantelpiece and oak floorboards and beautiful ornate plasterwork on the walls and ceiling. The ceiling height throughout the ground floor is exceptional, adding to the airy elegance of the rooms.
A graceful curved staircase connects the three storeys, leading up from the hall to a galleried landing and four spacious bedrooms, all with en suites. The master bedroom en suite, with beautiful claw-foot bath and spacious shower, is flooded with light from an impressive lightwell in the high ceiling. The basement level, with white-painted brick, double vaulted curved ceilings, has plenty of space for a large kitchen and dining area, a walk-in pantry, family room and study. In all there is nearly 4,000 square foot of living space, plus substantial storage in the attic and a separate garage.
Digswell House has a fascinating history. Built 200 years ago as a country gentleman's home, it became a hospital for wounded soldiers during the First World War, a conference centre from 1928 to 1939 hosting luminaries such as Mahatma Gandhi and George Bernard Shaw, and an artists' retreat after the Second World War.
THE OWNERS' STORY
“This has been the most wonderful house to live in, it's so spacious and a fantastic place to entertain, with our big drawing room and south-facing terrace overlooking the grounds. It's in a lovely spot, with an old church on one side, where our daughter was christened, and a cricket ground on the other.
Although it's quite a grand house it's also been a lovely family home. Our two children have grown up here and had the run of the beautiful grounds. The lawn stretches out from our terrace at the back of the house and there's a barbecue area that everyone uses in the summer.
We've had wonderful parties for the children when they were young and they both had their 18th and 21sts here. It's also a great place to live if you travel a lot, all the neighbours look out for one another and it's easy to lock up and leave.
We have loved living here but now that the children have left it feels too big for just the two of us. We will miss the wonderful proportions and elegance of the rooms, the history and the space, and the peacefulness of this lovely setting.”
